NORTHUMBERLAND — The Joseph Priestley House will celebrate Oxygen Day with free tours and demonstrations of some of Priestley’s experiments. The annual event marks Priestley’s 1774 isolation of the gas now known as oxygen while working in England.
Priestley later discovered that objects burned brighter in the gas and animals lived longer when breathing it in enclosed spaces. Organizers say the date was changed because the Northumberland County Historical Society will hold its 250th anniversary celebration with the Priestley House supporting those activities.
