PA Senator Lynda Schlegel Culver speaks to guests at a Central PA Chamber of Commerce legislative event
HARRISBURG — State lawmakers admit they are unsure what is holding up the state budget, with the Governor and legislative leaders not directly in the negotiation room. State Senator Lynda Schlegel Culver says a crisis over SEPTA funding has been resolved, but other disputes remain unclear.
State senator Lynda Schlegel Culver says there is a bill pending which would use last year’s budget for this year, “The house wasn’t going to run it, and then they were going to run it, so right now we’re waiting to see if they are sending us that back then we can pass it and send it to the governor, or there is something else coming. We keep being told ‘you’ll get an alert,’ we may be called back quickly (to cast a vote). We just added several new session days, so we’ll see. Its very frustrating, I’m concerned for my nonprofits, schools, anyone contracting with the state.”
She said legislators have been told to stay on alert, with extra session days added as talks continue. They warn nonprofits, schools, and state contractors could soon face cash flow problems if funding stops.
Some lawmakers suggest long-term fixes, such as automatic continuation of old budgets or two-year spending plans, while urging constituents to speak up about how the budget impasse is affecting them. She spoke about the budget to the Central PA Chamber of Commerce recently.
