SELINSGROVE — The Daily Item is reporting… A packed Selinsgrove Borough Council meeting drew more than 100 people night. Residents spoke out over a possible police agreement with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The newspaper reports Police Chief Francis Petrovich proposed joining ICE’s cooperation/grant program last month. The program could bring money for police vehicles, equipment, and reimbursed staffing costs in exchange for cooperation and assistance.
Those who were opposed said the agreement could create fear in a community with international students and immigrant families. Those who favored the agreement said the partnership could help keep criminals out of town.
Council Vice President Bobbie Owens says the borough is still reviewing the benefits and drawbacks. No decision will be made until after a larger public meeting.
