HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania hunters are once again heading into what’s expected to be another excellent bear season across the state. Game Commission biologist Brandon Snavely says strong breeding rates, large litters, and healthy habitat continue to sustain one of the largest black bear populations in the country.
Last year’s harvest totaled 2,642 bears from 56 of 67 counties, including a 774-pound bear taken in Monroe County. Game Commission Executive Director Steve Smith says with more than 200,000 hunters participating each year, Pennsylvania’s bear hunting tradition is unlike any other. www.HuntFishPA.gov.
